Date Monday Algebra Pre-test Tuesday The Real Number System Wednesday Integer Rules Thursday Operations with fractions and Decimals Friday Order of Operations Objective Bellringer Anticipatory Set Procedures Assessments Closures Students will take a pre-test on skills they learned last year to see which ones they’ve mastered & which ones they struggle with still. Students will learn the subsets of real numbers including rational, irrational, whole, natural, and integers. What math skills have you mastered from 8th grade? None 1. Bellwork 2. Check Homework 3. Lesson: 4. Homework 5. Closure 6. Reminders Pre-test None Go over pre-tests What types of numbers do you know? What is the difference between rational numbers and irrational numbers? 1. Bellwork 2. Check Homework 3. Lesson: 4. Homework 5. Closure 6. Reminders Homework Assignment 1 List and define the subsets of real numbers. Students will learn when to add or subtract integers based on their signs. Real Number System Lesson Check Problems How do you know when the sum of two numbers is negative? When is the product of two numbers is negative? 1. Bellwork 2. Check Homework 3. Lesson: 4. Homework 5. Closure 6. Reminders Homework Assignment 2 What are the rules to remember when combining integers? Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and decimals. “TBT” Sprint 1. Bellwork 2. Check Homework 3. Lesson: 4. Homework 5. Closure 6. Reminders Homework Assignment 3 What are some tricks to remember when performing operations with fractions? Decimals? Students will learn the order of operations PEMDAS and different ways to remember them. Write 4 things you learned this week? What is a fraction? How do you think performing operations with them will differ from operations of integers? Compare and contrast fractions and decimals. What is the importance of having an order of operations? What would happen if we did not have this process to follow? 1. Bellwork 2. Check Homework 3. Lesson: 4. Homework 5. Closure 6. Reminders Homework Assignment 4 What is the correct order for the order of operations? Are there ever any exceptions? Student Centered Activities Monday – None Tuesday – Students will be shown different examples of numbers and will have to vote on their white boards which group(s) that number belongs to. This is a great form of formative assessment because I can see which groups the students know the best and which ones they struggle with. Wednesday – Students will be in groups of 3 where they will have flashcards with different numerical expressions that they have to evaluate using their integer rules. The sets of cards will rotate amongst the groups so the students can have practice with different ones. Thursday – Students will work in groups to perform different operations on fractions and decimals Friday – Students will participate in PEMDAS RELAY! In this game, the students will be divided into 4 times where they will race to successfully calculate a long arithmetic expression where they must follow the order of operations. The winning team will win a prize.
