Identifying and Investigating Rocks Background: There are three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Each rock can transform into a different type of rock. This change occurs with Earth’s help. The Earth can add heat and pressure to the rock, or its winds and water can break rocks down. To show how the rocks change form, look at the rock cycle picture to the right: Purpose: In this activity, students will investigate the different forms of rock found on Earth. They will also be able to identify and discuss how the rock was formed. Procedure: For each rock in your box, identify the following features about that rock. Rock 1: Slate What type of rock is this? ___________________________________________________ How was the rock formed? __________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________. How does the rock “die?” ___________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________. What is the length of this rock (in centimeters)? _______________________________ What is the width of this rock (In centimeters)? ________________________________ What is the height of this rock (in centimeters)? ________________________________ What is the primary color of this rock? _______________________________________ Are there any secondary colors of this rock?___________________________________ Rock 2: Limestone What type of rock is this? ___________________________________________________ How was the rock formed? __________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________.
