PLANET in PERIL : LAKE CHAD is DISAPPEARING
1) How big did Lake Chad used to be?
How much has it shrunk?
6th largest/10,000 sq miles
90%
2) What does less water mean?
People depend on water Smaller fish = smaller people
3) How many people rely on Lake Chad?
37 million
4) What is much of the water of Lake Chad used for?
To irrigate crops
5) How is climate change partially responsible for the decrease in Lake Chad
Less moisture in the air to fall as rain/ water in lakes and soil also disappearing
Change in weather patterns = summer rains no longer replenish the lake
6) What is ironic about this situation?
Africa is the lowest in carbon emissions (cause of climate change), but it is the most vulnerable to climate change
7) What happens when their wetlands are not healthy?
No healthy wetlands = no healthy fish = no healthy people
8) Why is the poor diet a concern?
Makes the people vulnerable to disease
9) What is the main source of water for Lake Chad?
Chari River
10) What’s happening to the Chari River?
It’s evaporating too
11) What is the plan to solve this problem?
Divert water from the Congo River
What’s the problem with the plan?
Controversial & Unfunded
12) According to the video, what has combined to cause the decrease in Lake Chad and the Chari River?
Overuse & Climate Change

Invasive Species = alien species that take over and threaten native species
Bio-Control = introducing one species to control another
1) What problems are people having in Lake Victoria?
12-
2) What happens when a new, alien species in introduced to an environment?
3) What species was added to Lake Victoria half a century ago? WHAT HAPPENED?
4) How did the introduction of the Nile Perch lead to more crocodile attacks?
5) How did a romantic honeymoon lead to invasion of Water Hyacinth into Lake Victoria?
6) In 1989 Water Hyacinth was first potted in Lake Victoria, but just 7 years later the weed had clogged
____% of Lake Victoria’s shoreline.
7) How did the introduction of this alien plant hurt the local fishermen?
123-
8) How does the alien plant make the right conditions for Malaria?
9) How does the alien plant create the right conditions for the Schistocytosis parasite?
10) How did the alien Water Hyacinth take over Lake Victoria?
11) What is being done to stop and reverse the take over by the Water Hyacinth?

STRANGE DAYS : LAKE VICTORIA, UGANDA
Native Species = plants or animals in their natural habitat
Alien Species = plants or animals transplanted from one habitat to another
Invasive Species = alien species that take over and threaten native species
Bio-Control = introducing one species to control another
1) What problems are people having in Lake Victoria?
1-Increased number of croc attacks on people – even though the number of croc has not risen
2- Waterborne Diseases (Dysentery, Malaria, & Schistocytosis) are increasing
2) What happens when a new, alien species in introduced to an environment?
You alter the balance of the ecology – sometimes it takes over and crowds out native species
3) What species was added to Lake Victoria half a century ago? WHAT HAPPENED?
Nile Perch – they ate up 200 of the native species which vanished –
The biggest mass extinction of vertebrates in modern times.
4) How did the introduction of the Nile Perch lead to more crocodile attacks?
The big fish increased the number of fishermen on the lake – that meant there was more contact between humans and
crocodiles
5) How did a romantic honeymoon lead to invasion of Water Hyacinth into Lake Victoria?
Legend has it an engineer working in Rwanda brought an exotic South American water plant for his bride – then it
mysteriously escaped downstream to Lake Victoria
6) In 1989 Water Hyacinth was first potted in Lake Victoria, but just 7 years later the weed had clogged 80%
of Lake Victoria’s shoreline.
7) How did the introduction of this alien plant hurt the local fishermen?
1- Getting out to fishing grounds became a terrible struggle
2- Reduced catch and lowered income triggered widespread famine
3- Heavy vegetation caused dead plants to rot and foul drinking water
8) How does the alien plant make the right conditions for Malaria?
Creates stagnant pools of water – great breeding grounds for mosquitoes carrying Malaria
9) How does the alien plant create the right conditions for the Schistocytosis parasite?
Plants are good places for snails that carry the parasite to lay their eggs and multiply
10) How did the alien Water Hyacinth take over Lake Victoria?
Its predators are in Brazil, not Uganda, so there’s nothing to stop it from growing out of control
11) What is being done to stop and reverse the take over by the Water Hyacinth?
Weevils are being tested to see if they’ll eat the plant in Uganda they way they do in Brazil without causing further harm.
