United States Population
Problem Setup: The United States is made up of fifty very different states. One of the
easy differences to see is size or area. An easy difference to measure is population.
Below is a list of the population and the area of each state. Using this information you
will be able to find the population density (population divided by area) and then answer
the questions under the list. The states are divided up into four groups based on where
they are located. Transfer this information to a spreadsheet and do your calculations in
Excel.

1. Find the total area and the total population for each region (Western,
Midwestern, Northeastern, Southern).
2. Find the total area and the total population for the United States.
3. Find the population density for each of the states, each region, and the
United States.
4. Graph the percentage of total population that each region represents.
Description and Purpose: This problem could be used with students in sixth or
seventh grade. It gives them practice with finding the population density,
percents, and using calculations with spreadsheets. The spreadsheet would
allow students to transfer the information to a graph without the use of another
program. The data represents the population, area, and area density of each of
the fifty states as well as the entire United States.
