Situation A
A conversation between a Doctor and a Patient
Patient: Good Morning Doc. I am really overweight and I need your help so that I can
lose a few pounds.
Doctor: If that’s what you want, you need to follow this programme strictly for two
weeks. On the first day, you have to follow this diet strictly and on the second
day, you skip. On the third day, you continue again with the diet and the next day,
you skip. You continue with this routine for two weeks.
After 2 weeks, the patient returned to the doctor and he had amazingly lost 20 pounds.
Doctor: (Looking very pleased) See! The diet was very effective. It really worked on you.
Patient:(Looking very tired and exhausted) Well doc, I nearly died of skipping.
Situation B
Raj went to England on a working holiday and got a job as a company courier in London’s
West End. He was asked to deliver a load of computer equipment to a nearby customer. He
wasn’t sure where to go so he asked another member of the staff. He gave Raj a large scale
map and coloured in the route to take, with arrows.
Raj set off in the company car, full of confidence. But when he made his first turn down a
narrow road a double-decker bus and two taxi cabs were bearing down on him. He was
heading down a one way street and he backed off quickly and highly embarrassed,
accompanied by the hooting of unsympathetic drivers. Raj discovered that his map was riddled
with similar errors. So it took him several hours of frustrated driving to deliver the goods and
return to the base.
He confronted the guy who had given him such a hard time but the guy said, “You didn’t say
how you were getting there. I assumed that you were walking.
