Mits Márti Márti Mits, EB4XGQ, Nov 24, 2016 Cranial nerves regulating eye movements, accomodation and involved in eye-protection What are the nerves that are responsible for eye movements? These nerves are: Cranial nerve III – Oculomotor Cranial nerve IV – Trochlear Cranial nerve VI – Abducens Oculomotor nerves innervate all the other ocular muscles: It originates from the third nerve nucleus "The oculomotor nerve includes axons of type GSE, general somatic efferent, which innervate skeletal muscle The nerve also includes axons of type GVE, general visceral efferent" Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculomotor_nerve Trochlear nerves innervate the superior oblique muscles and they are responsible for looking downwards and inwards It has the greatest intracranial length It is the only cranial nerve which leaves the brain stem at the dorsal side of it. Abducens nerves innervate lateral rectus muscles which are responsible for the abduction of the eye It is a somatic efferent nerve so it carries nerve impulses away form the central nevous system. This nerve leaves the brain stem at the junction of the medulla and the pons. (After leaving the brain stem) It reaches the eye by running upward then bending forward.
