Marshmallow Monsters Marshmallow Monsters are pets that require minimal care (and can be very tasty). These rare creatures are made out of marshmallows, gumdrops and gummies. By very careful chromosome analysis, our marshmallow genetists found that Marshmallow Monsters have six pairs of chromosomes. Chromosome PHENOTYPE GENTOTYPE 2 Antenna AA 1 Antenna Aa 0 Antenna aa 3 Bumps BB 2 Bumps Bb 1 Bump bb 3 Curly Tail TT or Tt Straight Tail tt 4 2 Eyes EE or Ee 1 Eye ee Red Eye(s) RR # 1 2 5 Orange Rr Eye(s) Yellow Eye(s) 6 3 Body Segments 2 Body Segments Mommy Marshmallow Monsters DNA: rr DD or Dd dd Daddy Marshmallow Monsters DNA: Aa, Bb. Tt, Ee, Rr, Dd Aa, Bb, Tt, Ee, Rr, Dd Procedure: 1. Choose one person in your group to be the “Mommy” coin flipper and one to be the “Daddy” coin flipper. 2. For each chromosome flip your coin. The dominant allele is passed on in meiosis if the coin lands heads up. The recessive allele is passed on if the coin lands tails up. Record your results in the data table. 3. Determine the phenotypes for all six traits and record in the data table. 4. Build your baby Marshmallow Monster. Before you eat your creature, I must check your work!!!!! Which of the Marshmallow Monster’s traits show incomplete dominance? 2. What is the diploid number of chromosomes in a Marshmallow Monster? _____________ 3. What is the haploid number of chromosomes in a Marshmallow Monster? _____________ 4. What heterozygous genotypes does your baby Marshmallow Monster have? 5. What homozygous dominant genotypes does your baby Marshmallow Monster have? 6. What homozygous recessive genotypes does your baby Marshmallow Monster have? 7. A Marshmallow Monster with 2 antennas is crossed with a Marshmallow Monster with only 1 antenna. What are the chances that an offspring will have 2 antennas? 1 antenna? 2 antenna? Show Punnett Square. 8. A Marshmallow Monster with red eyes is crossed with a Marshmallow Monster with yellow eyes. What are the chances that an offspring will have red eyes? Yellow eyes? Orange eyes? Show Punnett Square. 9. A Marshmallow Monster with red eyes is crossed with a Marshmallow Monster with yellow eyes. What are the Orange eyes? Show Punnett Square. chances that an offspring will have red eyes? Yellow eyes? 10. A Marshmallow Monster with a curly tail is crossed with a Marshmallow Monster with a straight tail. What are the chances that an offspring will have a curly tail? Straight tail? Show Punnett Square.
