Protein Synthesis Children’s Book
Due Friday, April 27
Protein synthesis is one of the most important processes in an organism. As you’ve learned, it creates proteins needed
for an organism to function. It is also a multi-step process that some students find difficult to remember. You, however,
are going to have no problem mastering it! To simplify the process of protein synthesis, you will create a children’s book
(comic book or graphic novel style is ok too) which explains protein synthesis in a way simple enough for a child to
understand. Be sure to include lots of pictures, as any good children’s book does. This assignment is worth 60 points and
will go in the Unit Exams/Projects category of your grade. If you get an A on this project I will exempt you from the
protein synthesis section of the Unit 8 Exam. There will be a classwide competition for most creative book and most
clear explanation of the process.
THIS SHEET MUST BE TURNED IN WITH YOUR COMPLETED BOOK FOR CREDIT!
You must include:
 Explanation of what a protein is (5 pts) _____
 The Central Dogma of Biology (5 pts) _____
 Explanation of what RNA and DNA are. (5 pts) ____
 Transcription—what it is (10 pts) ____

Where it happens

mRNA—what it is and how it’s made. This will need to include an explanation of what bases and their
complementary pairs are and the substitution of U for T in RNA.

RNA Polymerase

Bases
 Translation—what it is (10 pts) ____
o
Where it happens
o
tRNA—what it is and what it does.
o
What a codon is.
o
How an amino acid chain is made and what it is.
 What happens to the protein once it is made. (5 pts) ____
 Each explanation includes pictures and minimal words and explanation is clear. (10 pts) _____
 Creativity and work quality (10 pts) ____
 Classroom participation (10 pts) ____
