How to
Perform the
Activity:
Reference:
 to learn the 4 layers of the rainforest
 to observe the water cycle (i.e., evaporation, condensation,
precipitation) under closed conditions
 one large aquarium
 cover to seal the aquarium
 gravel
 compost or potting soil
 various tropical plants

first, talk about the 4 layers of the rainforest:
 forest floor
 understory
 canopy
 emergent layer
 set down gravel on bottom of aquarium, top with compost
 you can discuss how the forest floor is like a big compost heap with
new vegetation falling from above and rotting to make soil (providing
nutrients for the trees!)
 plant the plants
 you can also tape pictures of rainforest animals on the outside of the
aquarium at the layers where they would be found
 water your plants and seal the aquarium with the cover
 water will start to condense on the aquarium and drip back down inot
the “forest”
 explain that the water is evaporating from the soil and being
transpired by the leaves; it normally condenses into clouds and then
falls back as rain
