INFORMATION SOURCES Evangel University Library Research Guide BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES RESEARCH This guide is designed to introduce researchers to basic library information sources that should be used first in doing research on subjects in the BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES. Under each type, some of the works are listed. For added similar guides please ask for subject specific Information Sources in the EU Library. CQ Weekly, formerly Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report Weekly with cumulative quarterly indexes. Cumulated into Congressional Quarterly Almanac Ref JK 1 .C66 (an annual) and then into the quadrennial,Congress and the Nation Ref KF 49 .C653. Useful for legislation passes in Congress. Additional sources may be located by using the indexes and abstracting services listed below. PERIODICAL INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS SocINDEX with Full Text (Online on EBSCO) This online database includes hundreds of full text journals useful in the Behavioral Sciences. ATLA Serials (Online on EBSCO) Organized by the American Theological Library Association. Indexed items include: articles from international journals, essays from books, and book reviews. Can search by journal, scriptural reference, and other fields. (Coverage for journals: generally vol. 1 to present) ProQuest (ONLINE) - This includes indexing and full text to magazines and journals from two databases - Criminal Justice Periodicals and Research Library. This is especially useful for the behavioral sciences. EBSCOHost – Includes PsycINFO, PsycARTICLE, and SocINDEX with Full Text. (Coverage: generally 1985-present, Updated: daily). Gale / Cengage (ONLINE) – This includes indexing and full text to magazines and journals in several databases. ERIC (ONLINE at www.eric.ed.gov ) - The Education Resources Information Center serves as the largest source of educational information in the world. (Coverage: Updated: twice weekly). Users should use the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors or the online Thesaurus to choose appropriate terms. N.Y. Times (Online on Gale / Cengage) Covers subjects related to the Behavioral Sciences. PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) Earlier years available. Researchers should use the subject heading, “Social Service.” Index is concerned with public policy issues and emphasizes factual and statistical information. PsycARTICLES (ONLINE ) - Full Text Database that contains full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA) or affiliated publishers. (Coverage: vol. 1 – present). PsycINFO (ONLINE) - Produced by the American Psychological Association, this database is useful not only for psychology, but for psychology related research in other behavioral science areas when desiring a cognitive or affective perspective. Though 45 countries and 30+ languages are represented, 90% of the articles are in English. Use the Thesaurus of Psychological Terms or the online Thesaurus to find words, scope notes, related terms, broader terms, and narrower terms. Religious and Theological Abstracts (ONLINE) - From the association of the same name, this database has English language summaries for articles on Christianity, Judaism, and World Religions. The original language of the article is indicated at the end of the abstract. (Coverage: 1958-present) Social Sciences Index - Formerly titled Social Science and Humanities Index and International Index this title indexes psychology journals and psychology articles appearing in social science journals from 1965 - present. (Past years stored on south balcony) Sociological Abstracts - Similar to Psychological Abstracts includes psychology as viewed by sociologists. Users should consult its Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms to help locate appropriate terms. 1980 - present (Past years stored on south balcony) SPECIALIZED BIBLIOGRAPHIES Bibliographic Index Ref Z 1001 .B595 There must be at least 50 items in the bibliography of any research book, study, or paper to be listed. Directory of Unpublished Experimental Mental Measures Ref BF 431 .G625 Tests: A Comprehensive Reference for Assessments in Psychology, Ref BF 176 .T43 Test Critiques Ref BF 176 .T419 Statistical Abstract of the United States Annual. Ref HA 202 .U5x Information is quantified and presented in tables. Statistical Abstract for Missouri Ref HA 471 .S8 Similar information may be available from any state government. Statistical Portrait of the United States: Social Conditions and Trends Ref HA 214 .S84 This has both text and graphics to provide an overview of a subject. Annual Review of Psychology Ref BF 30 .A56 Has cumulative chapter title index. Annual Review of Sociology Ref HM 1 .A763 Has cumulative chapter title index. International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences Ref H 40 .A2 I5 Good for background information. Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences Ref H 41 .E6 This was published before the International Encyclopedia above, but still considered to be useful for historical information. All major subjects within the behavioral sciences can be expected to have encyclopedias, handbooks, and dictionaries. Researchers should seek them for general signed articles that may give an overview and history plus a bibliography. GOVERNMENT SOURCES The United States Government Manual Annual. Ref JK 421 .A3 A guide to departments and agencies. Provides names, web sites and telephone numbers plus a statement of the purpose of the unit. Congressional Directory Ref JK 1011 .U53x Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and biographical data of all members of Congress plus names of staff members. Official Manual. State of Missouri Annual. Ref JK 5431 .A4 The official guide to all state departments and employees. Similar books will probably be available for most states. There are thousands of Federal and State Government Web sites: http://www.usa.gov/ is the Federal Government’s Official Web Portal; http://www.govspot.com/state/ is a portal for states. DIRECTORIES Directories in Print Ref Z 5771 .D55 Good place to find groups interested in specialized topics. Encyclopedia of Associations Ref AS 22 .E53 Many topics are represented by one or more associations. These have collected and published information which may be very useful. DMOZ: Open Directory Project http://www.dmoz.org/Reference/Directories/ A directory of directories. DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES Both the MSU and Drury libraries are US Depository Libraries. MSU collects 84 percent of all documents published by the U.S. government. By law these are made available to all researchers who need the information. Indexes are available in the depository areas to help access the data.
