THE POST
Wymondham College seeks to appoint an experienced and creative teacher of Business
Studies and Economics to lead our well established Business Studies and Economics
department.
Teaching to both GCSE and A Level this post provides excellent opportunities to join a well
resourced department in a highly successful state day and boarding school with an
outstanding reputation.
If you are an enthusiastic team player who believes in excellence, this position could be the
job for you.
A willingness to undertake boarding duties is not a requirement of this post, but boarding
duties could be available at the request of the successful candidate.
WYMONDHAM COLLEGE
Wymondham College has been synonymous with excellence in secondary education since
its foundation by Norfolk Education Committee in 1951. It has a well founded national and
international reputation for the academic, sporting and cultural successes of its students. Its
last OfSTED inspection took place in November 2007 when the College was judged to be
“Outstanding”. Raw examination results and value added measures at KS4 have been
consistently amongst the best in the country in recent years. A level results in 2013 were
62% A* to B. In the last two years thirteen students have been successful in gaining places
at Oxford and Cambridge and a further thirteen have received offers for 2014. In all some
90% of leavers on to university.
The College was accorded International School status by the British Council in 2008 and
enjoys extensive links with partner schools in China (via the Norfolk link with Xuhui in
Shanghai), Spain, France, Germany, the Czech Republic and Argentina. Students and staff
benefit from an exciting programme of cultural visits, exchanges and curriculum enrichment
involving our partner schools, including a teacher exchange scheme with Argentina. The
College hosted the international session of the Model European Parliament in March 2013.
Wymondham College works with Norfolk County Council to provide support for the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award Scheme throughout the county and it enjoys strong links with local
schools through the All Routes Partnership and the Wymondham Cluster of schools. The
College is a leading member of the State Boarding Schools’ Association (SBSA) and the
Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA). The current Principal, Melvyn Roffe, is a recent past
National Chairman of BSA.

Boarding is central to the Wymondham College experience. Some 640 of the College’s 1300
students board on a full or weekly basis. Most boarders come from East Anglia, but there is a
significant number of students from further afield including continental Europe and Hong
Kong. Service Children are well represented among the student body. As a state funded
boarding school all education at Wymondham College is free but parents (or sometimes
charitable trusts or local authorities) pay a fee to cover the costs of the boarding provision at
the College.
The College itself converted to Academy status on 1st February 2011.
The College has its own unique ethos and is a busy, successful and enjoyable place to work.

THE BUSINESS STUDIES AND ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
The Business Studies and Economics Department currently comprises three full time and
two part time teachers. There is a large and enthusiastic Sixth Form uptake for both the
Business Studies (AQA) and the Economics A-levels (OCR), and the Applied Business
course (Edexcel). GCSE Business Studies (AQA) can be selected by students entering Year
9 as an option choice.
A range of extra-curricular activities is undertaken, including the Young Enterprise Company
Programme, the Young Enterprise “Our World” Volunteer Programme, ICAEW Business
Accounting & Skills Education competition, BP’s Trading Challenge Road Show, the Stock
Market Challenge and visits to businesses. A significant number of Year 13 leavers take
Business Studies / Economics or a related discipline at University, including Russell Group
universities and Oxford and Cambridge.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The person appointed will:





Be graduate teacher of Business Studies and Economics.
Be willing and able to teach Business Studies and Economics to A Level.
Be flexible and imaginative in developing new ideas and resources, as well as
adapting to curriculum changes.
Have a good understanding of the role that the subject can play in the education of
children of all ages;
Have excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, be able to work
with colleagues from different disciplines and partners from the wider community for
the benefit of students.
JOB DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities of the Post
The successful candidate will be employed as a teacher under the standard conditions of
service for teachers at Wymondham College. This includes the requirement to work on some
Saturday mornings. Additional holiday entitlement compensates for Saturday morning work.
The Head of Business Studies and Economics will be responsible to the Principal for the
teaching of Business Studies and Economics from year 9 within the College and teaching
classes in the College using his/her skill, experience and best endeavours. He/she will also
provide leadership, guidance and support to colleagues in the Department and develop
excellent practice in teaching and learning.

The Head of Business Studies and Economics is also responsible for the development and
delivery of a programme of extra-curricular activities to support the teaching and learning
within the Department and for the Department’s contribution to College’s Community,
Innovation and Enrichment (CIE) programme.
All staff take part in the College’s performance management process. He/she will abide by
the Code of Conduct for Staff and Volunteers at Wymondham College.
The teacher shall undertake such other responsibilities as the Principal may from time to time
reasonably require.
Specific Responsibilities
The Head of Business Studies and Economics shall:

Lead, develop and monitor the effectiveness of the Business Studies and Economics
curriculum of the College, to promote good practice and high standards and
intervening where necessary to provide support to colleagues;

Ensure that all teaching and learning in department is effective and that all students
are being properly prepared for public examinations where appropriate;

Contribute to extra-curricular provision of the College by developing and
implementing opportunities for students both in lesson time and at other times;

Participate as a team leader in the College programme of Performance Management
and Continuing Professional Development;

Undertake other duties and responsibilities as the Principal may reasonably require;

Attend meetings (e.g. General College Board / Heads of Department) as necessary,
contribute on behalf of the Department and disseminate information as required.
Additional Responsibilities
The Head of Business Studies and Economics shall:

Develop and deliver a programme of extra-curricular activities and other enrichment
opportunities for students and others;

Develop and deliver the department contribution to the College’s Community,
Innovation and Enrichment (CIE) programme, including outreach work with primary
schools and the development of links with industry, commerce, higher education
institutions and other bodies.
REMUNERATION
This post is remunerated on the Main Pay Range (up to £31,868) or Upper Pay Range (up to
£37,124) as appropriate. In addition the post holder will receive a TLR payment 2/2 £4,262
per annum. An additional Recruitment Allowance may be payable to match the salary of an
exceptional candidate who has not had the opportunity of moving to the Upper Pay Scale.
A willingness to undertake boarding duties is not a requirement of this post and those not
wishing to do so will not be disadvantaged. Additional Boarding Emoluments are, however,

paid to staff undertaking boarding duties. Non Resident Boarding Tutors (NRBTs) are paid
an hourly rate starting at £11.13 per hour (depending on service and experience) for duties
as part of a team supervising a boarding house in the evening.
All payments are pensionable under the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
Staff at the College benefit from a number of non contractual benefits including free
refreshments and meals in a Staff Dining Room.
DRESS CODE
The post holder will be expected to wear appropriate business attire and will be supplied with
a Staff ID. This must be worn at all times to ensure that students, staff and visitors are able to
identify Wymondham College employees.
CRIMINAL RECORDS SCREENING
All applicants must be prepared to undergo screening to confirm their suitability to work with
children and young people.
