X-Axis: Horizontal number line
Y-axis: Vertical number line.
Ordered Pair/Coordinates: Pair of numbers written ( x , y )
Origin: Point (0, 0); where the x and y axes intersect.
Cartesian Coordinate System: coordinate grid/plane formed by the intersection
of the x and y axes.
Quadrants: the four sections of the Cartesian Coordinate System.
Diagram:
Ordered Pairs
Always written in the form (x, y).
Ex: (2, 3)
Graph the x coordinate first, then the y coordinate.
Plot the following on the same set of axes:
1) ( 1 , 5 )
2) ( -2 , 3 )
3) ( -1 , -4 )
3
5) (
,2)
6) ( 5 , 0 )
7) ( 0 , -3 )
2
4) ( 7 , -2 )
Plot each problem on a set of axes:
1) (-1,-4) (0,2) (-3,1) (4,0) (-2,1) (3,4)
2) (1,-4) (-1,0) (2,3) (-4,-1) (3,2) (1,0)
3) (3,1)
(0,-2) (-1,-3) (2,2) (-3,0) (4,4)
Decide if the ordered pair is a solution:
1) x + y = 9; (0,9)
2) 2x + y = 5; (3,-1)
3) 4x – 3y = 6 (2,1)

x ;(-8,2)
4) y =

5) x = -6; (5,-6)
Complete each table of values and plot the points:
Q: What do you think the values in the table represent?
1) 2x + 3y = 12
3) 4x – 9y = -36
