Science Chapter 6 - Vocabulary Words
Earthquake – a movement or vibration in Earth
Fault – a break in Earth’s outer layer caused by the
movement of rocks.
Focus – the beginning point of an earthquake
seismic waves – energy released as vibrations caused
by rocks along fault lines moving and breaking
glacier – a large mass of snow and ice that moves over
land
ice ages – periods of very cold temperatures and many
glaciers
interglacial period – periods of time with warmer
temperatures that come between ice ages.
crust – the solid rock that makes up Earth’s outermost
layer
mantle – the layer of rock lying below the crust
inner core – a sphere of solid material at Earth’s
center
Pangaea – the name for the supercontinent that began
to break apart over 200 million years ago, forming the
continents we have today
volcano – a type of mountain that forms because of
the activity of earth’s plates, which releases materials
from earth’s interior.
magma – molten rock deep within the Earth’s crust
lava – molten rock after it comes out of erupting
volcanoes
vent – an opening in the Earth’s surface through
which volcanic materials erupt
erosion – the movement of material by wind, water,
ice, or gravity
