Natural Resources
Fossil Fuel- a material that formed from the remains of ________
organisms and is used today as a source of energy.
Coal:
o Dead organisms turn into peat, then the peat is covered by
sediment, then pressure turns the sediment into coal.
Oil and gas:
o Dead organisms fall to the _______________, they are buried in
sediment, and pressure turns the decayed material into oil
and gas.
Using fossil fuels:
o Gas in cars
o Burning oil for ______
o Burning coals for electricity
o Natural gas for stoves
Non renewable resources- a resource that can be used up faster
than its made, or cannot be _________________. (fossil fuels)
Renewable resources- resources that nature can replace quickly.
(Wind, water power, sunlight, fish, trees)
We have to be careful of how fast we use up renewable resources,
because of how long it takes for them to be replaced.
70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water.
__________ water:
o Running water- some streams and rivers
o Standing water- lakes and reservoirs. A _______________ is an
artificial lake that is built to store water.
o Ground water- ground water seeps through the ground
through aquifers. An aquifer is and underground layer of rock
or soil that has pores and can absorb water. Most ground
water is pumped through a well.
Cleaning water: To clean water, it runs through several tanks.
o _______________-sticky particles attract any dirt.
o Sedimentation- sticky particles and dirt fall to the __________
of the tank.
o Filtration- Water passes through filters
o Disinfection -Chemicals are added to kill bacteria.
