Poetry Anthology Project
The purpose of this project is to give you a chance to discover the joy in reading poetry.
You will create an anthology of poems all about the same theme. You will need to find 10 poems about
the same theme. Some examples of themes are: beauty, nature, death, food, love, adventure, etc.
Poems must be copied by hand or typed on paper other than notebook paper. Each poem needs its own
page, and you may illustrate or decorate the page if you wish.
Make sure you write the title of the book, website, or other source of your poem at the bottom of the
page.
After each poem, you need to include a response to the poem, typed or handwritten. Your response
should include:




An explanation of the type of poem it is (narrative, lyrical, ballad, haiku, limerick, or other types
we discuss in class and describe in our notes).
What poetic devices are used (rhyme, rhythm, repetition, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, and
any others we discussed in class and describe in our notes).
Imagery or language you think is captivating and effective
Your general response to the poem (how it makes you feel, what it makes you think of, etc.)
Finally, you need to compose a poem of your own that fits your theme.
The entire anthology should be bound with an attractive cover. It is due June 8. There will be a
checkpoint on May 25. At that time, you need to have a theme chosen, and have at least 3 poems
written and analyzed.
Have fun!

Spring Pools
by: Robert Frost
These pools that, though in forests, still reflect
The total sky almost without defect,
And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver,
Will like the flowers beside them soon be gone,
And yet not out by any brook or river,
But up by roots to bring dark foliage on.
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods -Let them think twice before they use their powers
To blot out and drink up and sweep away
These flowery waters and these watery flowers
From snow that melted only yesterday.

Spring Pools
by: Robert Frost
“Spring Pools” is a lyrical poem because it is written like a song about little pools of water in the forest.
It uses a rhyming scheme with the first 2 lines of each stanza rhyming, then lines 3 and 5 rhyme, and line
4 and 6 rhyme.
It uses the repetition of “like the flowers beside them” to describe the pools and what happens to them.
Frost also uses personification to give the trees a personality, like they are just waiting to open up their
leaves and make the forest dark, and will “drink up” the pools. The poem tells them to “think twice”,
even though trees can’t think.
I thought the line “…from snow that melted only yesterday,” at the end of the poem was interesting,
because I hadn’t thought of where the pools came from until that point. I also like how the pools are
described as reflecting the sky “almost without defect”, like a mirror.
This poem made me feel like I was sitting in a quiet forest in late March or early April. It also made me
think of simple pleasures that are only around for a little while and then are gone. Holidays, birthdays,
or a snow day are some examples of such pleasures.
