1.1 Integer Arithmetic
CA Standard: 1.0
Objective: I can add,
subtract, multiply, and
divide integers. I can also
determine if a number is
an integer, real, rational,
or irrational.
(Textbook pg. 74)
Objective met?
 Yes
 No
Write as algebraic expressions.
a.) The product of 3 and x, minus 14
equals 26.
Simplify:
a.) 5 – 2 – 9
b.) Five plus the quotient of x and 6 is 20.
b.) –2 – 7 + 12

Rules of Addition
Same signs add, different signs
subtract. Keep the sign of the
larger number, then you’ll be
correct.
Same Sign:
Keep the sign of the larger number
-5 and +3 have different signs, so
subtract the numbers (5 - 3 = 2)
and keep the larger number (-)
Example 1
-4 and -5 have same signs, so add
the numbers (4 + 5 = 9) and keep
the larger number (-)
Example 2
Difference Sign:
Example: Simplify:
a.) -5 + 3
-2
b.) -4 + (-2)
-6
-4 and -2 have same signs, so
add the numbers (4 + 2 = 6)
and keep the larger number (-)
Simplify:
a.) 7 + (-9)
b.) -3 + (-6)
c.) -7 + 3
d.) -2 + 9
e.) 5 + (-3)
f.) -1 + (-6)
Example: Simplify:
a.) -4 - 5
-9
b.) -7 - (-8)
-7 + 8
1
First change the double negative to a
positive. Then, -7 and +8 have different
signs, so subtract the numbers (8 - 7 = 1)
and keep the larger number (+)
Simplify:
a.) 9 – (-5)
b.) -2 – (-5)
c.) -7 - 1
d.) -8 - 3
e.) 3 – (-6)
f.) -4 – (-9)

Rules of Multiplication and Division

Different Sign:
Simplify:
a.) (-8) (-6)
b.) (-3) ( 7)
c.) (-5.3) • (9)
d.) (4) (-2.7)
e.) (-8) • (7)
f.) (-6.5) (-3)

Simplify (Order of Operations):
a.) 3²+ 5 (8 – 9)
b.) (14-9)² + 3· 6
c.) (12-4) + 9²
d.) 14 ÷ 7 · 3 - 8
