Let all things their Creator bless, and worship Him in humbleness; O praise Him, alleluia. Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One! O praise Him, O praise Him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. PRAYER OF ENTRANCE —2— WORDS OF WELCOME CALL TO CONFESSION From Genesis 3:1-7 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT From Colossians 2:13-15 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Christians, I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins in Jesus’ name. Our help is in the name of the Lord, The Maker of heaven and earth. O Lord, open our lips, And our mouth will show forth your praise! HYMNS OF GRATITUDE & PRAISE LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER Words: John Newton | Music: Laura Taylor | CCLI # 2665423 1. FATHER, LONG BEFORE CREATION Words: from a Chinese hymn; tr. by Francis Johnson | Music: Andrew Osenga | CCLI # 2665423 1. Father, long before creation | thou hadst chosen us in love, And that love so deep, so moving, | draws us close to Christ above. Still it keeps us, still it keeps us | firmly fixed in Christ alone. 2. Though the world may change its fashion, | yet our God is e'er the same; His compassion and his covenant | through all ages will remain. God's own children, God's own children | must forever praise his name. 3. God's compassion is my story, | is my boasting all the day; Mercy free and never failing | moves my will, directs my way. God so loved us, God so loved us | that his only Son he gave. 4. Loving Father now before thee | we will ever praise thy love, And our songs will sound unceasing | 'til we reach our home above, Giving glory, giving glory | to our God and to the Lamb; T. Giving glory, giving glory | to our God and to the Lamb. —4— RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS & COMMUNICANTS Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope save in His sovereign mercy? Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ? I do. Do you promise to support the church in its worship and work to the best of your ability? I do. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the church, and promise to study its purity and peace? I do. PRAYER FOR NEW MEMBERS RECEIVING GOD’S WORD MISSIONS MOMENT REPORT FROM JR HIGH RYM CONFERENCE CONFESSION OF FAITH FROM THE WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM QUESTION 4 | MUSIC BY BRUCE BENEDICT Q. What is God? A. God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON JOB 38:1-18 English Standard Version Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: —5— "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? "Who shut up the sea behind womb, when I made the clouds darkness, when I fixed limits place, when I said, 'This far where your proud waves halt'? doors when it burst forth from the its garment and wrapped it in thick for it and set its doors and bars in you may come and no farther; here is "Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken. "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Children Pre-K through 2nd Grade may be dismissed to Children’s Church at this time if that is their parents’ desire THE GOSPEL LESSON LUKE 6:39-49 English Standard Version 39 He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. —6— 46 "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great." The Gospel of the Lord! Praise to you, Lord Christ! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON — KNOWING GOD — THE AUTHORITY OF GOD Pastor Matt Grimsley PRAYER OF COMMITMENT RECEPTION OF GIFTS HYMN OF RESPONSE JESUS CAST A LOOK ON ME Words: John Berridge | Music: Matthew Perryman Jones | CCLI # 2665423 1. Jesus cast a look on me, | give me sweet simplicity. Make me poor and keep me low, | seeking only thee to know. 2. All that feeds my busy pride, | cast it evermore aside. Bid my will to thine submit, | lay me humbly at thy feet. 3. Make me like a little child, | of my strength and wisdom spoiled. Seeing only in thy light, | walking only in thy might. 4. Leaning on thy loving breast, | where a weary soul can rest. Feeling well the peace of God, | flowing from his precious blood. 5. In this posture let me live, | and hosannas daily give. In this temper let me die, | and hosannas ever cry! DEDICATION OF GIFTS —7— FEASTING AT GOD’S TABLE THE PEACE OF CHRIST In the ancient church, members of the congregation greeted one another with a sign of friendship. In the same way, let us welcome one another in the Lord: May the peace of Christ be always with you! And also with you! Let us offer one another a sign of peace. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING SURSUM CORDA (LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS) Music: Steve Hindalong & Terry Taylor | Arr. Bruce Benedict | CCLI # 2665423 Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: All: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Leader: It is right to give him thanks and praise. All: It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING INVITATION TO THE TABLE Those who have professed faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins within a church body and who have been baptized are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper here at Redeemer. We receive the Lord’s Supper worthily only if we bear in mind that Christ gave his body for the remission of our sins; it is his merit only that admits us to this table. It is dangerous to eat the body and blood of the Lord otherwise. For this reason, we ask those who do not meet the above conditions to refrain from eating. We do encourage you to come forward for prayer from one of our ministers if you desire it, or to remain seated and to pray and reflect on what you have heard and seen in the service. The Christian who doubts his standing before God should labor to have his doubts resolved. This brother or sister in Christ is especially encouraged to eat this feast that he or she may be further strengthened in the faith. —8— WORDS OF INSTITUTION Please come forward, by row, to receive the bread and the cup. If you are not taking Communion, you may come forward for prayer, or remain seated. Please note that the center cup and inner circle contain grape juice, for those who desire it. We break bread in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And we declare the great mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God! COMMUNION HYMNS ALAS! AND DID MY SAVIOR BLEED Words: Isaac Watts | Music: Irish Traditional; Arr. Bruce Benedict | CCLI # 2665423 1. Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I! Was it for crimes that I had done he groaned upon the tree! Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! 2. Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker died, for man the creature’s sin. Thus might I hide my blushing face while his dear cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, and melt my eyes in tears. 3. But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’tis all that I can do. Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I! WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS Words: Isaac Watts | Music: Gregorian Chant; arr. by Lowell Mason | CCLI # 2665423 1. When I survey the wondrous cross | On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, | And pour contempt on all my pride. 2. See from his head, his hands, his feet, | Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, | Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 3. Were the whole realm of nature mine, | That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, | Demands my soul, my life, my all. —9— MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS Words: Edward Mote | Music: William B. Bradbury | CCLI # 2665423 1. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand. 2. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Refrain 3. His oath, his covenant, his blood, support me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. Refrain 4. When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh may I then in him be found. Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain ANNOUNCEMENTS DOXOLOGY From Jude 24-25 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!
