Competencies: Health
Competencies may be demonstrated by:








Taking a written test
PowerPoint presentation
Exhibit and/or display
Oral exam
Craft/drawing/art project
Music/video/skit
Written paper
Some other means to which the teach consents
There will be a limit of 2 competencies per any one demonstration type (i.e. only two written test or two
papers will be allowed. I want to see diversity, creativity, and real thought.) Each student will also be
required to complete at least 1 major project which will be presented to the class as a whole (more will
be allowed as time permits.)
Deadlines:
The following competencies must be completed in the terms listed below. I will not accept any of the
competencies before they are discussed in class, because SDA Christian philosophy differs in many ways
from the philosophies proposed in the book and I want your work to reflect these differences.
Competencies turned in late will be subject to penalties as outline by the teacher in the class.
1st Term of Semester: Competencies C1-C3 must be completed
2nd Term of Semester: Competencies C4-C6 must be completed
3rd Term of Semester: Competencies C7-C8 must be completed
Competencies C9 and C10 may be completed at any time within the semester.
C1: Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy
choices
The student will choose a project that will demonstrate their knowledge to make healthy choices. This
project must include the following:
 Define, compare and contrast the concepts of health and wellness. Include discussion of
quality of life, characteristics of a healthy person, 5 types of health, and the illness-wellness
continuum.
 Define and Identify risk factors. What are risk factors? Describe various risk factors and what
you can do to reduce them.
 Explain how to take personal responsibility for health. What are some guidelines for making
healthy choices? What are some ways you can help ensure your health for your lifetime?
C2: Demonstrate a knowledge of the components and aspects of Mental
Health
The student will choose a project that will exhibit their understanding of mental health and its effect to
make healthy choices. This project must include the following:
 Define Mental Health. (Don’t just quote the 1 sentence definition in the book; explain in at least
3-4 sentences what the definition means.)
 Personality & Self-Esteem. What is personality? What are different personality types? How does
personality affect health? How is personality formed? Describe the three main personality
theories mentioned in the book and who came up with them. What is self-esteem and who does
it factor into health? What are emotions and how do they affect health? Explain about coping
mechanisms.
 Managing Stress. What are the different types of stress? What are the causes of stress? What
are the affects of stress on the body? How can you recognize stress? What incredible advantage
do we as Christians have when it comes to dealing with stress that is mentioned in class, but
left out of the book?
 Mental Disorders & Suicide. What are mental disorders, how can you recognize them, and what
are their causes? Describe in detail the different types of mental disorders. What are the
warning signs of a suicidal person? What are some reasons people resort to suicide? How can
you help to prevent suicide? What are some treatment options for mental disorders and suicidal
tendencies, including some options we have as Christians?
C3: Demonstrate a knowledge of the components and aspects of Social
Health
This project must address the following aspects:
 Define social health. This should be at least a 2-3 sentence explanation.
 You & Your Family. How does one’s family affect one’s social health? How has the typical family
been changing in America over the years? What are the various forms of families and how does
each affect the health of the individual? What are the responsibilities and roles of the various
members of the family? What are some stresses a family may face? What is family violence and
what type of impact does each type have? What are some strategies, including ones available
to us as Christians, for keeping our family healthy?
 Building Healthy Relationships. What are relationships? What is probably the most important
aspect of any relationship? What are some ways to have effective communication? What is the
importance and disadvantages of compromise? What are the various types of friendships and
how does each type have an impact on a person’s overall well being? What are some issues
people may have with friends? What role does dating play, what are the stages, the dangers,
and responsibilities involved in dating? What is the importance of marriage and what are some
things you can do to make a marriage successful? What things cause a marriage to be more
likely to fail? What are some differences between males and females that add stress to a
relationship, and how will understanding these differences help improve the relationship?
Why do we believe that abstinence is the best practice for teenagers? Who does
understanding these concepts (differences in genders and abstinence) help to explain the
social policies of the school?
 Preventing Violence. What is violence? What harm does it do? What are some factors and
strategies for preventing violence? What is the only true cure for preventing violence?
4: Demonstrate a knowledge of the components and aspects of Human
Development
This project must address the following aspects:
 Heredity, Reproduction & Pregnancy, Birth. Briefly describe the endocrine system and how it
relates to development, reproduction, and aging (1 or 2 paragraphs is enough.) Identify the
structures and functions of the reproductive organs of both sexes. What are some of the
disorders of each? What are some things each gender can do to keep their reproductive systems
health? Briefly discuss heredity and some inherited disorders. What are some good and bad
reasons people have to deciding to have children? What is the impact of teenage pregnancy?
Briefly and non-graphically describe the process of fertilization. What happens in each trimester
of pregnancy?
 Childhood & Adolescence. What are the stages of early childhood and what developmental
changes take place in each? What is puberty, what changes take place at this time (puberty and
adolescence), what is the major reason for these changes, and what impact do these changes
have on youth physically, emotionally, and socially? What responsibilities do you have as an
adolescent?
 Adulthood, Aging, & Death. What is maturity and how is it demonstrated? Explain the major
stages of adulthood and what unique goal opportunities and challenges each stage faces. How is
death? How is death an important part of life? What impact does death have on the living?
Briefly, why does God allow death, and what is the ultimate outcome?
C5: Demonstrate a knowledge of the components and aspects of
Nutrition & Fitness
This project must address the following aspects:
 Food & Nutrition. What purpose does food serve? Discuss the six basic nutrients, give an
example and list the functions of each. What are some strategies and tools the book lists for
maintaining a healthy diet? What was the original diets God had in mind for us, why did He
change them, and what have been the results? What would be the benefits to returning to His
diet?
 Making Healthy Choices. Briefly describe strategies to making healthy choices when it comes to
diet and weight management. List the risk factors associated with obesity and how you can help
to reduce these.
 Digestion & Excretion. Briefly describe the digestive and excretion processes and what impact
proper and improper diet has on them.
 Cardiovascular & Respiratory Health. Briefly discuss the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Discuss some dysfunctions and diseases of each and some things you can do to preserve and
improve the health of each.
 Exercise, Rest & Recreation. What is exercise, what effects does it have on the body (be specific
for the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems.) What is fitness, and how
does it impact health? What is the importance of rest and sleep? (What is the difference
between rest and sleep?) What is recreation and why is it important to health?
 Personal Care. Briefly describe the importance of various types of hygiene and personal care.
C6: Demonstrate an understanding of the problems of Substance Abuse
and how to avoid/prevent it
This project must include the following aspects:
 Define substance abuse. This should be at least a paragraph long or so. Just like there are
different aspects of substances that are abused, there are different types of substance abuses
which play a factor in your definition.
 Types of abused substances. Compare and contrast the various types of substance abuse,
including alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, prescription drugs, OTC (Over-the-counter) drugs, and
even natural substances. What are the similarities between them all, and what are unique
differences and problems associated with each? Which are increasing in abuse rates, which are
decreasing, and which are remaining rather constant?
 Preventing Drug Abuse. What are some of the factors that lead to substance abuse? Why is it so
hard for people to quit once they started? What are some strategies an individual can do to help
overcome an addiction he/she has? What are some ways we may help someone else who has a
substance abuse problem? What are some steps people can take to make sure they or their
loved ones never get hooked in the first place?
C7: Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and effects of disease
and ways to prevent it.
This project must include the following aspects:
 Define disease. 2 to 3 sentences.
 Infectious Disease. What are infectious diseases? How do they differ from non-infectious
diseases? How are they transmitted? What are epidemics and pandemics? What are at least 5
steps that can be taken to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases?
 AIDS & Sexually Transmitted Diseases. What are STDs? How are they contracted? What are a
few of the more common STDs and what are their symptoms and effects? Why AIDS is so
dangerous compared to, for example, syphilis or gonorrhea? What are some steps you can take
to make sure you don’t contract a STD? Why is God’s standard of the purity of marriage an
important safeguard against STDs and other health issues in a relationship?
 Noninfectious Diseases & Disorders. How is the treatment of non-infectious diseases so
different from the treatment of infectious disease? What are some major non-infectious
diseases? What are some steps that can be taken to prevent and diagnose non-infectious
disease?
C8: Demonstrate deeper learning by selecting and completing a project
in some area of environmental and community health
This project must include the following aspects:
 The components and challenges of a healthy environment. What are environmental risk
factors? What are steps that can be taken to minimize or remove many of these risk factors?
 Healthcare. What is healthcare, and why is it so important? Define the following: general
practitioner, specialist, physician’s assistant (PA), HMO, and PPO.
 Public health. What is public health? Why is it important? What are some steps and concepts
that are important in maintaining public health? What are some public health organizations,
both in this country, and in the world?
C9: Demonstrate an understanding of your own personal health by
tracking and recording daily habits and practices in one area of your
daily life
This project must include the following aspects:
 Tracking your diet for 1 term. This should include EVERYTHING you eat for a whole 6-week
period. You don’t have to be too specific about serving size or number of helpings unless you
want to, but list everything for every meal, and everything you eat between meals. Record it at
least daily, but it would be better at each meal.
 Draw conclusions about how your particular lifestyle may be impacting your personal health
and the health of those around you. This should be 2-3 paragraphs at least. It should reflect
what you have learned from analyzing your diet.
C10: Demonstrate to other students your ability to communicate your
knowledge of some area of health by presenting to the class as a whole
one of your projects.
This project must be a major project and larger in scale than the projects you do to complete the other
competencies.
