Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) Pharmacy Intern Program 2018 We run a comprehensive pharmacy intern program here at CDHB. We will have two intern positions next year which start early-January. The interns are trained in all aspects of hospital pharmacy and are well-qualified at the end of their training to work competently as a pharmacist. Our pharmacy program complements the Pharmaceutical Society program. The program starts with an orientation where interns shadow clinical pharmacists on the wards and are introduced to in-house areas. There are then various rotations throughout the 49 week training program covering Dispensary Sterile and Cytotoxic Dispensing - we compound various IV preparations and sterile antibiotic eyedrops as well as co-ordinate the external compounding of cytotoxics, TPNs and antibiotic infusion pumps. Medicines Information department Drug Utilisation Review Clinical wards – general medical, surgical and specialist wards as well as wards at other Christchurch hospitals e.g. spinal unit, mental health We expect each intern to complete a research project, with guidance, which will be presented either in-house or at the NZHPA conference. We have 100 staff within our pharmacy service and expect our interns to play a full role within our pharmacy team. They take part in our professional development program e.g. search strategies and patient case studies Each intern has one preceptor for the year but many pharmacists are involved with the training both in-house and on the wards so a wide variety of experience is gained. We also organise a rotation to a community pharmacy for OTC experience. Our interns are encouraged to stay within our hospital pharmacy service for future employment after their internship to build on their clinical knowledge, vacancies permitting. We are aware that hospital intern positions are limited so we also encourage pharmacists qualified through community intern programs to consider hospital pharmacy as a career post-registration. The intern positions are currently being advertised on the PSNZ and CDHB websites. Interviews will take place during May here at Christchurch Hospital but are flexible with interview dates depending on exams and holidays. We offer to pay the internship fees for our interns in return for a bonded period of service (depending on availability of continuation positions). We look forward to your applications!
