Chapter 22
1. List the functions of the digestive system.
2. Describe the general organization of the digestive system.
3. Define:
a. retroperitoneal
b. intraperitoneal
4. Describe the serous membranes associated with the digestive system. Draw and
label a sagittal section of the abominopelvic cavity showing the parietal peritoneum,
visceral peritoneum, mesenteries, a retroperitoneal organ, and an intraperitoneal
organ.
5. Describe the general histology of the alimentary canal. Draw and label a diagram of a
transverse section, showing all layers, associated structures, and tissue types.
6. Define:
a. oral cavity
b. vestibule
c. labia
d. labial frenulum
e. fauces
f. palatoglossal arches
g. palatopharyngeal arches
7. Describe the structure and functions of the tongue.
8. Describe the three major pairs of salivary glands and compare their histological
structure and location.
9. Describe the permanent dentition.
10. Draw and label a tooth in its socket including the crown, root, enamel, pulp cavity,
root canal, apical foramen, cementum, periodontal ligament, and gingiva. Define
each part.
11. Describe the relationship of these structures to the teeth:
a. periodontal ligament
b. alveolar process
c. gingivae
12. Describe the anatomical location of the esophagus.
13. Where is the gastroesophageal (cardiac) sphincter and what is its function?
14. Describe the anatomical location of the stomach.

15. Draw and label a diagram of the stomach including the greater curvature, lesser
curvature, cardia, fundus, body, and pyloric region; also be able to describe the
location of these structures.
16. Where is the pyloric sphincter and what is its function?
17. Draw and label a section of stomach wall including mucosa, gastric glands,
submucosa, and muscularis (all layers) and associated structures (rugae).
18. Describe the anatomical location of the small intestine and its divisions.
19. Describe the location and functions of the
a. Brunner's glands
b. Peyer's patches
20. What are the myenteric and submucosal plexuses and where are they located?
21. Draw and label a cross section of the small intestine at the duodenum and include
the four layers, microvilli, and plicae circulares and associated structures (lymphatic
nodules, submucosal glands, etc.).
22. Describe the location, structure and functions of the
a. plicae circulares
b. villi
c. microvilli
23. Describe the anatomical location of the large intestine and its divisions. Draw and
label a diagram of the large intestine and its components including cecum,
vermiform appendix, and haustra.
24. Describe the structure of the large intestinal wall. Draw and label a transverse
section showing all layers.
25. Define:
a. haustra
b. tenia coli
c. ileocecal valve
26. Where is the appendix and what is its function?
27. Describe the anatomical location and structure of the rectum.
