A Failed Peace Timeline 1919-1940
How did the West Respond to the Twin Crises of Economic Depression & Fascism?
Was Appeasement an Irrational and/or Immoral Policy Orientation For the West?
Was Deterrence a Rational Policy and /or an Immoral Policy Orientation for the West?
Add to YourTotalitarian Timeline:
Put each event on your timeline. Think of these collectively as plot twists in a story called “Democracy on the
Run”. They collectively tell the story of how the victorious democracies would fail to preserve and expand their
values across Europe and by 1939, fail to preserve the peace. For each document: Was the event an example of
DETERENCE or APPEASEMENT? Evaluate how the event moved the nations of Europe toward war (WOD:
casus belli – an act that justifies war)
Appeasement:the policy of acceding to the demands of a potentially hostile nation in the hope of maintaining
Peace.
Deterence: a : the inhibition of criminal behavior by fear especially of punishment b : the maintenance of
military power for the purpose of discouraging attack c: measure taken by a state or group of states to prevent
hostile action by another state.

Conclusion: And I know your running out of space – consider a flip-flap extension to your other conclusions.
Include a written conclusion with your timeline. Write a conclusion that describes the response of the Western
powers to the economic and diplomatic challenges of the 1920’s and 30’s. Your summary should posit an
explanation of the march to a renewal of the conflict begun in 1914. That is to say, an explanation of the
proximate causes of WWII.
