Square root of a number




When writing the answer to square root problems we use  symbol.
 This symbol is read as plus or minus.
We use it because the answer can be
 both negative or both positive.
Perfect Squares

If the answer to a square root problem is an integer, then it is a perfect
square.
Non-Perfect Squares

If the answer to a square root problem is a decimal, then it is a non-perfect
square.
Approximating Square Roots
The following square root problem is a non-perfect square. Use a calculator
to find the square root and round the answer to the nearest whole number.
 The top if a folding table is a square whose area is 945 square inches.
Approximate the side length of the tabletop to the nearest inch.
Irrational Numbers
 A number that cannot be written as a quotient of 2 integers.
 The decimal does not terminate or repeat.
Real Numbers
 The set of all rational numbers and irrational numbers
