Lesson 7 – Controlling the Tongue
Matthew 12:34 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance
of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matthew 12:37 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12:33-37 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit
corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the
heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say
unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 23:8-12 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called
masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And
whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Romans 2:17-24 17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, 18 And
knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; 19 And art
confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, 20 An instructor of
the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. 21 Thou
therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost
thou steal? 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that
abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the
law dishonourest thou God? 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is
written.
Matthew 5:48 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Ephesians 4:22-24 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt
according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new
man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Genesis 1:26-28 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and
over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them,
Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea,
and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Genesis 2:16-17 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest
freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou
eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Genesis 6:5 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of
the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Matthew 19:25-26 25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be
saved? 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are
possible.
John 15:5-8 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth
much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is
withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my
words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that
ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Romans 6:11-14 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through
Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts
thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves
unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Margin Verses
Matthew 12:33-34 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit
corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Luke 11:5-13 5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and
say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have
nothing to set before him? 7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut,
and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and
give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he
needeth. 9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be
opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or
if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Luke 18:1-8 1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2
Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in
that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while: but
afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth
me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust
judge saith. 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long
with them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he
find faith on the earth?
Romans 8:1-14
Ephesians 3:14-21 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the
whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to
be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that
ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and
length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be
filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask
or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus
throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Proverbs 6:16-17 16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud
look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

spirit.

ceaseth.

tongue.

Romans 10:14-15 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they
believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall
they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of
peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Colossians 3:15-17 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body;
and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And
whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by
him.
