Unit 1 Lessons 1-5 Study Guide
Steps to Rounding:
Find the place value: circle it.
Look next door: underline it.
If underlined number is 5 or more, raise the circled number by 1.
If underlined number is 4 or less, leave the circled number alone.
Everything else to the right becomes a 0.
Round 145 to the nearest ten.
The 4 is in the tens
place so I circled it.
The 5 is next door
so I underlined it. 5
is in the 5 or more
group, so I added
one to the 4. 4
became a 5 and
everything else changed to a 0.
YOU TRY: Round 235 to the nearest HUNDRED.
Order of Operations: PEMDAS
When there is more than one operation, order is very important! Use the rhyme Please
Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally to help you remember what to do first.
3 x 4 + (5 – 1) =
Do parentheses first: 5-1 is 4 so you are left with 3 x 4 + 4
We do not have exponents, move to next step.
Multiplication is next. 3 x 4 = 12 so you are left with 12 + 4
Addition is last. 12 + 4 = 16.

What is an Exponent?
An exponent tells how many times a number is
multiplied by itself.
What is a square number?
A square number is a whole number that is the product of 2 equal factors.
So what does that mean?
2 x 2 = 4 so 4 is a square number
Do you see a
pattern?
3 x 3 = 9 so 9 is a square number
4 x 4 = 16 so 16 is a square number
5 x 5 = 25 so 25 is a square number
We often use the exponent of 2 to represent squared numbers:
The square root is taking the squared number and finding its factor:
= 4
(because 4 x 4 =16)

Problem Solving Steps:
1. Understand the problem: READ IT, THEN RE-READ IT.
2. Analyze the problem: Underline important information.
3. Plan how to solve the problem: what operation will you use.
4. Solve the problem!
5. Check you answer. Using opposite operations can help you check an
answer.
After reading my problem I
underlined information I needed to
solve it. Looking at the key words
how much faster, I should subtract.
After subtracting 53-39 I get an
answer of 14 miles/hr. To check my
answer I can add 39+14 and it get 53.
