go to 2nd STAT (this will take you to the list menu)
cursor over to the MATH menu (one column over from OPS)
select SUM (option 5 on the TI-82)
again hit 2nd STAT
this time select SEQ( from the OPS column (option 5 on the TI-82)
then enter the equation you wish to sum using a single variable of your choice (the X, T, O
variable tends to be the easiest but any letter will do)
enter a comma after the equation
identify the variable you chose for the equation by inserting it after the comma
enter another comma after the variable
next enter the number at which you wish to start your summation
enter another comma after the beginning number
next enter the number you wish to end the summation on
enter another comma after the ending number
finally enter the numbers you wish to include in the summation, for instance if you want every
number between the first and the last numbers summed you would enter a 1, if you wanted every
other number between the first and last numbers summed you would enter a 2 etc.
close with a end parenthesis
press ENTER
the number that appears is the summation of the numbers you indicated in the equation you
entered.
Example: sum seq(X^2, X, 2, 4, 1) = 29
