Rhyme
Identical rhyme – use of the same words (way/way)
Exact rhyme – words containing identical final sounds resulting from sound or spelling
Day/way or day/weigh
Inexact rhyme (Slant/half/approximate/near/off rhyme) – words almost rhyme but not
quite
(bleak/broke – mirth/forth)
Eye rhyme – words look like they should rhyme but don’t
(enough/through – cough/bough)
Masculine Rhyme (Heavy stress/rising rhyme/ accented rhyme)– final syllables of the
word are stressed;
(used for serious affect - support/rapport)
Feminine rhyme (Falling/dying//double rhymes – accented syllable is on any syllable
other than the last syllable- sometimes used for less serious affect
(revival/arrival – pitter/patter)
Internal rhyme – word within the line rhymes with the word at the end of the line
(Each narrow cell in which we dwell)
End rhyme – last word of a line rhymes with anther last word of a line
Rhyme scheme – refers to the pattern of rhyming sounds
