Review Guide for MAT187 TEST #5 SPRING 2011 NO CALCULATORS NO SCRATCH PAPER Q1 (10 points) Solve an exponential equation by making the bases the same. See the examples I did in class and your homework in section 4.5 # 1 – 10. Q2 (10 points) Solve an exponential equation by taking the natural log ( Ln ) of both sides. See class notes and homework section 4.5 #’s 19, 20 and 55 Q3 (10 points) Solve a logarithmic equation. See 4.5 homework # 37 – 49 and of course your class notes. Q4 (2 parts worth 5 points each). In this question you will be given the graph of a particle that is undergoing radioactive decay and a second graph demonstrating how money is growing in a savings account. You will be asked some basic questions about what we covered in section 4.6 pertaining to these graphs. If you took good notes in class and understood what we discussed in class in section 4.6 this question will be the easiest and quickest problem on your test. No significant math is involved here. You may want to review pg 416 of your text if you did not take good notes on section 4.6. There are no specific homework problems to refer to here. I am just testing your comprehension of what we discussed in class as it pertains to exponential growth and radioactive decay. Q5 (10 points) Solve a given system by graphing. (8.1) Q6 (10 points) Solve a given system by EITHER substitution or elimination (your choice). (8.1) Q7 (15 points) Solve a system of 3 equations in 3 unknowns by FIRST setting up an augmented matrix and then using EITHER Gaussian Elimination with back substitution OR Gauss Jordan Elimination. Either way, be sure to show your row operations “on top of your arrows” just like I taught you in class. (8.3….although we first discussed Gaussian Elimination with back substitution in 8.2 so you can look back in 8.2 notes for the row operations etc.) Q8 ( 3 parts worth 5 points each) Here you will tested to see if you can do matrix multiplication, matrix addition (subtraction) and scalar multiplication. (8.4)
