A. Pre-Evaluation: Answer the following question.
Why is their variation among siblings and between offspring and parents?
Sometimes, genes skip generations and go right to the kids of the parents that didn’t
get the genes of their parents. If my grandma has brown and my grandpa had black hair, and
my mom got black hair, I could get the black from her or the brown from my grandma, even
though it skipped my mom. Other genes are passed from the parents to a child and not the
other, like my brother had freckles from my mom, and I don’t have them from my dad. The
siblings could take after the other parent than the other. The parents might not have given
the same traits they have. Some genes are dominant over other genes and some are
recessive. If the parents had the genotypes Bb x BB (B = brown hair & b = blonde) If you use a
punnet square to show the possible outcomes for the genotypes of the offspring, you would
get 75% chance of BB and a 25% chance of the offspring getting blonde hair. It is random of
which child gets which gene. It resets the genes every time a new child gets the genes & it is
random every single time. That’s why some children look different than each parent. Some
children can get the same genes from their parents & the same genes as their sibling and
that’s why they look alike. Like my brother and I both have brown eyes like our mother and
my dad has hazel eyes. Brown eyes are dominant over hazel eyes and my brother and I got
the genes as my mother.

Why is their variation among siblings and between offspring and parents?
There is variation between siblings because some siblings get the traits from one
parent and no the other if the parents have two different color eyes, for example. Some
children can get the same genes from their parents & the same genes as their sibling and
that’s why they look alike. Like my brother and I both have brown eyes like our mother and
my dad has hazel eyes. Brown eyes are dominant over hazel eyes and my brother and I got
the genes as my mother. If the genotypes were BB x Bb then there was a 50% chance I
could’ve gotten brown eyes and a 50% chance I could’ve gotten hazel eyes ;like my father. It
is random every time a child gets genes and the chances start over every time and that’s why
some siblings look similar to each other and different.
