PART 1
1. Translate the following text into Spanish.
This method is used for determining the resistance of concrete to repeated
freezing and thawing in contact with demineralized water or 3% sodium
chloride (NaCl) solution. The thickness of the specimens, which are sawn from
150mm cubes, is 50mm and the dimensions of the sawn test surfaces are
150mm x 150 mm. During the test, the sawn test surface is upwards. The edge
of the rubber sheet extends 20mm above the test surface which makes it
possible to keep the freezing medium in place during the test. All the sides
except the test surface are covered with thermal insulation and a polyethylene
sheet prevents evaporation from the surface of the 3mm deep layer of the
freezing medium on the test surface.
The specimen is subjected to repeated freezing and thawing. One temperature
cycle requires 24 hours. After the specified numbers of cycles the amount of
material scaled from the test surface is determined. The cumulative value after
56 cycles is used for evaluating the scaling resistance.
The test requires four specimens obtained from four cubes. During the first day
after casting, the cubes are stored in the moulds and protected against drying
by use of a plastic sheet. The air temperature is 20ºC2K.
After 242 h, the cubes are removed from the moulds and placed in a tap
water bath with a temperature of 20ºC2K.
When the cubes are 7 days old they are removed from the water bath and
place them in the climactic chamber, until the freeze-thaw testing starts.
Directly after sawing, wash the specimen in tap water, wipe off the excess
water with a moist sponge and finally, without delay, return it to the climatic
chamber.

2. Using the following sketch, write a 120-word text in English.
(Here I inserted the photocopy of one of the sketches of the
orange book.)
3. Re-write using the appropriate connector and verb form.
An algorithm ___________ [be] a procedure ___________ [FINALITY solve] a
usually complicated problem ___________ [MEANS carry out] a precisely
determined
sequence
of
simpler,
unambiguous
steps.
______________________ [EQUALITY procedures be used originally] in
mathematical calculations ___________ [CONTRAST be used] now widely in
computer programs.
Flowcharts ___________ [PASSIVE use frequently] ___________ [FINALITY
facilitate] understanding of the sequence of steps. ___________ [CAUSE] each
step ___________ [PASSIVE follow mechanistically], value judgements and
complex, non-quantitative situations ___________ [be usually not] susceptible
of algorithmic treatment except in the form of greatly simplified models.
4. Insert the appropriate connector to express cause, consequence,
purpose, condition or contrast as necessary.
1. The resistance has a constant value, ......................... the voltage-current
characteristic is linear.
2. ....................... a resistor is a passive element, the proper current-voltage
relationship is illustrated in the figure.
3. The work depends on the choice of path, ............ the kinetic frictional force
is a nonconservative force.
4. Metals are ......................... good thermal conductors ......................... they
have the largest thermal conductivities.
5. A force is nonconservative ........................ the work it does on a moving
object depends on the path of the motion.
5. Join the following pairs of sentences using a relative pronoun.
Simplify the resulting sentence if possible.
1. Metals have a pool of electrons. Electrons are more or less free to wander
throughout the volume of the metal.
2. The figure shows a pan of water. It is being heated on a gas burner.
3. We shall consider the forces acting on a disabled truck. The men are pulling
the truck forward by means of a rope.
4. There are two different objects. Their temperature is constant.
5. A resistor is a physical device. You can buy a resistor in an electronic parts
store.
