Introduction:
Because of Saul's disobedience, God rejected him as king over Israel. God selected someone
new to be king, a man after His own heart, but the transfer of the crown would not be
immediate. In fact, this young man named David would serve King Saul for some time
before finally becoming the king himself.
APPLICATION
The Bible tells us that man looks at the outward appearance, while God looks at the heart.
In today's lesson, we read about a young man named David, who although the youngest of
seven brothers, was chosen by God to become the next king. David had a heart for God and
wanted to please Him. We would be wise to follow David's example to seek after the Lord
and strive to please Him with all of our hearts.
Look at Psalm 139 and how we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God. Even when
others might seem bigger or greater – God looks at our hearts.

Introduction:
God helped David many times throughout his life. David was the youngest son of Jesse. As a young
man, David watched over his father's sheep, which could be a very dangerous job. When David
heard Goliath defy the armies of the living God, he knew that God would help him defeat the giant,
just as God had helped him protect the sheep. The battle was on, David relied on God's power, not
his own weapons to defeat the giant Philistine.
APPLICATION
Sometimes we may be the only one willing to make a stand for God, which can be scary, but
we can take comfort in knowing that the battle is the Lord's. Even though the task may seem
gigantic, God will never give us more than we can handle. We should trust God and be
encouraged by the strength He provides.
Look at Psalm 23 – how with God on our side we should fear no evil.

Introduction:
Our story today is about David, before he became king of Israel. Saul, the king at that time, had been
chasing David for a long time. If he ever caught David, he would surely have killed him. One day,
David caught his enemy off guard. He was no doubt tempted to kill Saul before Saul killed him. Let's
read what happened.
Application:
Having self-control means to keep your thoughts, actions, and desires in line with God's Will for you.
It means to resist things that may seem good on the surface, but are actually bad. We call it selfindulgence when someone gives in to these bad actions or desires. For example, we can indulge in
food, bad language, gossip, sassing, and many other things. But when we chose to have self-control
over these harmful desires, we will be following the Will of God.

Rather than focussing too much on the sin itself, just thinking about the fact that David is
described as a good and righteous man throughout the bible and a man who loved God.
Think about how even though we make mistakes, God loves us and he works in our lives
anyway.
Looking at Psalm 145 is the main focus of this lesson – the character of God as
trustworthy, faithful and righteous. Encouraging the children to go home and pick a
favourite Psalm in preparation for next week.
Ideas for Lesson 5 – Writing Psalms or Reading favourites
Sometimes it is good to encourage our children to share things they have learnt or
discovered at home or in Sunday school. We would like them to share some of their
favourite Psalms (have been asked to do this the previous week). And perhaps even write
their own songs/poems of praise to God – this has worked well in youth club before. For the
younger ones we could have some preprinted psalms such as psalm 23 where they could
draw pictures to illustrate.
