Weather Vocabulary
Air pressure: Air pressure is the force exerted by the weight of a column of air
above a particular location.
Wind Vane: Also called a weather vane, is a tool for measuring wind direction.
Cumulus Clouds: Means "heap" or "pile" in Latin. They are often described as
"puffy" or "cotton-like" in appearance and related to severe weather arriving.
Stratus Clouds: Flat, hazy, featureless clouds of low altitude varying in color
from dark gray to nearly white. Stratus clouds may produce a light drizzle or
snow.
Cirrus Clouds: Thin, wispy clouds blown by high winds into long streamers.
They are considered "high clouds" and they generally mean fair to pleasant
weather.
Humidity: Water vapor or dampness in the air. Absolute humidity is the quantity
of water vapor in a given volume of air, expressed by mass.
Weather Front: The boundary between two air masses of different temperatures
and densities.
Water Cycle: Also known as the hydrologic cycle or H2O cycle, describes the
continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth.
Anemometer: A device for measuring wind speed, and is a common weather
station instrument.
Thermometer: A device that measures temperature.
Rain: Water falling in drops condensed from vapor in the atmosphere.
