Standards Addressed: COS # 12. Explain the causes and consequences of World War I, including imperialism, militarism, nationalism, and the alliance system. Specific Objectives: The students will be able to recognize and identify the types of propaganda used during World War I (slogan, bandwagon, fear, name calling, testimonial, and plain folks). Required Materials: Textbook, PowerPoint presentation on propaganda posters used during WWI demonstrating the different types of propaganda used and information to determine the type, 3 video clips (New Government Guidelines (Healthy) Regarding School Lunches, Texting while Driving, and Red Light Cameras), laptops. Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Students will define propaganda. Teacher and students will discuss propaganda used today such as slogans in advertising. Example (Nike’s Ad: “Just do it!” and Campbell’s soup: “Um, Um, Good!”) Teacher will tell the students the purpose for this lesson: to be able to recognize and identify the different forms of propaganda used during World War I to gain public support for the war. After learning these different types of propaganda, students will have the opportunity to design their own piece of propaganda using one of the types learned in this lesson. Step-By-Step Procedures for Teaching the Lesson: Students will view a PowerPoint presentation on propaganda posters used during WWI demonstrating the different types of propaganda used. Students will view the following types of propaganda used during WWI: Slogan, Bandwagon, Fear, Name Calling, Testimonial, and Plain Folks. During the PowerPoint presentation, the teacher and students will discuss the posters viewed and determine which and why they are that type of propaganda. Jeana H. Hudson ED515 – Technology Lesson Plan 2 Following the PowerPoint presentation, the teacher and students will discuss the various types of propaganda. The teacher will answer any questions the students may have. The teacher will then show the students the following 3 video clips: Yahoo! Video Detail for Hold the fries: New school lunch guidelines http://abclocal.go.com/wls/video?id=7896930&pid=7895768 Texting while driving – Yahoo! Video Search http://youtu.be/K2D3hB278Gc Yahoo! Video Detail for Red Light Camera Debate http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/video?id=8198104&pid=null After the 3 videos are viewed, the teacher will give the students their assignment. They must choose a topic from one of the 3 videos, choose a side for or against it and create a Glogster propaganda poster illustrating their perspective. Guided Practice/Monitoring: Students will get their assigned laptops, go to http://edu.glogster.com/ and create an account making note of their username and password. They will create a Glogster page choosing a topic related to one of the three videos watched. Their Glog page should include the following: a. A minimum of 3 graphics from the Glogster library b. A catchy phrase or “attention getter” should be included indicating your viewpoint. Remember this is your propaganda poster…you want to convince others of your viewpoint on the topic. c. A minimum of 2 notes with information about the topic. d. A design on your Glog wall as a background. e. The video of the chosen topic should be embedded on the page. f. A photo related to your topic g. A note with the type of propaganda used The teacher will walk students through setting up their Glogster accounts. The teacher will walk around the classroom and assist students with any questions they may have and aide them in setting up their Glogster accounts. Jeana H. Hudson ED515 – Technology Lesson Plan 2 The teacher will then walk students through Glogster and how to work the program. The teacher will show students a Glogster poster she has created to demonstrate what is expected. The teacher will monitor students’ work and have them submit it through email. Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): This lesson will give students insight and understanding of the types of propaganda used during WWI to gain public support for the war. It will help students recognize how propaganda is used in everyday life to persuade individuals or groups for or against a topic or product. For example, as the lesson was introduced, the teacher discussed with students how propaganda is used in advertising such as Nike’s, “Just do it!” or Campbell’s soup, “Um Um Good.” Assessment Based on Objectives: The students will complete their propaganda poster showing their ability to recognize and identify the types of calling, testimonials, and plain folks) with 80% accuracy. Assessment Tool: Rubric is attached. Adaptations (For Students With Special Needs): Provide handouts with notes explaining the assignment in detail. Repeat instructions as needed orally and written. Make frequent progress checks. Extensions (For Advanced Students): Advanced students will be given more freedom of design for their Glogster propaganda posters. Teacher will help them focus on the many possibilities they can choose – think outside the box. Place emphasis on divergent thinking. Possible Connections to Other Subjects: This lesson provides understanding of propaganda and how propaganda can influence one’s opinion. This can be related to numerous aspects of one’s life such as product advertising, college choices, and various others. Reflection: This was an interesting and fun lesson. Students showed interest in the presentation and were excited to create their propaganda posters. This could have been done on poster board or notebook paper instead of Glogster if technology was not available. However, if at all possible, USE TECHNOLOGY. The students were excited to use technology for this project. They had opportunities to be create and think out the box. Jeana H.
