These “micro tears” are repaired by beefing up the fibres with extra proteins so they will be adapted to the exercise the next time. A protein called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is turned ...

Do the constraints of human speciation cause
Do the constraints of human speciation cause

... It is fascinating to realize that now we have available the tools to prove the hypothesis that speciation recruits the same set of tissue-specific genes that are active in those organs important for speciation. This often-repeated recruitment mechanism may explain the high percentage of genes expres ...

DIET AND THE EVOLUTION OF SALIVARY AMYLASE

... In humans, the AMY1 gene on chromosome 1 produces salivary amylase. Humans are diploid organisms, meaning that, except for the genes on the X and Y chromosomes, they have two copies of most genes—one copy inherited from each parent. However, genetic studies show that people can have anywhere from ...

The gene for the enzyme steroid sulphatase (STS) is of particular interest in the context of sex chromosome organization and evolution as it is the only wellcharacterized X-linked locus in humans which has no functional, Y-linked equivalent and yet escapes from inactivation (Craig & Tolley, 1986). These networks are usually organized in modules such as the pathways in the citric acid (TCA) cycle of a metabolic network [1]. Disease states may ensue when biological functions are abnormally regulated, for exam ...

... Only a few research laboratories are studying mutations in the other three genes. Yan et al.32 suggest that the majority of HNPCC families that manifest MSI tumors will be accounted for by MSH2 and MLH1. In total, however, mutations in these genes only account for approximately one half of the famil ...

NEDD9

Neural precursor cell expressed developmentally down-regulated protein 9 (NEDD-9) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NEDD9 gene. NEDD-9 is also known as enhancer of filamentation 1 (EF1), CRK-associated substrate-related protein (CAS-L), and Cas scaffolding protein family member 2 (CASS2). An important paralog of this gene is BCAR1.
