Is atherosclerosis an autoimmune disease? Open Access
Is atherosclerosis an autoimmune disease? Open Access

... Immunologic research into pathogenic mechanisms operating in autoimmune-mediated atherosclerosis initially focused on adaptive immunity. Current interest is directed to more basic inflammatory mechanisms. Chronic inflammation (innate immunity-associated) may trigger initial events that can lead to a ...

... During the first half of 2011, our facility observed 15 CLABSIs in our ICU locations. The number of expected CLABSIs during this timeframe, based on national data, was 10.397 CLABSIs This yields an SIR of 1.443, indicating that we observed approx. 44% more infections than expected Based on statistic ...

Hygiene hypothesis

In medicine, the hygiene hypothesis is a hypothesis that states that a lack of early childhood exposure to infectious agents, symbiotic microorganisms (e.g. gut flora or probiotics), and parasites increases susceptibility to allergic diseases by suppressing the natural development of the immune system. In particular, the lack of exposure is thought to lead to defects in the establishment of immune tolerance. The hygiene hypothesis has also been called the ""biome depletion theory"" and the ""lost friends theory"".
