... As you can see by looking at the table, the tolerance of the resistors has meant that in the E12 series (so called because there are 12 values) we have all possible values available to us. So, if we wanted a 17.5 Ohm resistor, the nearest value is 18 Ohms. But this resistor has a range of 16.2 Ohms ...

Using a VMI Optocoupler in Conjunction with High Voltage Relays

... The relays used are special-purpose high-voltage relays, designed to hold off at least 20 kV, and with mechanical switching lifetime in the millions of cycles. Although adequate for switching low voltages, this circuit is unreliable for high voltages because relays are “hot switched” i.e. contacts a ...

Lab 2 – Stepper Motor

... One final issue has to do with the power supply for the stepper motor. The power supply that you have in the kits is a +9V AC-DC wall adapter2. However, the stepper motor is rated for only +5V DC. If you were to connect the motor to the +9V supply, the motor will overheat. Therefore, we need to lowe ...

Electrical ballast

An electrical ballast is a device intended to limit the amount of current in an electric circuit. A familiar and widely used example is the inductive ballast used in fluorescent lamps, to limit the current through the tube, which would otherwise rise to destructive levels due to the tube's negative resistance characteristic.Ballasts vary in design complexity. They can be as simple as a series resistor or inductor, capacitors, or a combination thereof or as complex as electronic ballasts used with fluorescent lamps and high-intensity discharge lamps.
