Module 4: The Role of Genes in Cancer

... instead of the two copies found in other people.7 As described in Module 2, cancer occurs when cell division gets out of control. Mutations can trigger cancer, whether it is due to an environmental exposure, such as tobacco smoke, a genetic predisposition, or both. Usually, several cancer-promoting ...

The DNA molecules of the organelles are putative vestiges of the chromosomes of these bacteria. 17. Chromosomal elements Pa ...

Production of carotenoids by recombinant DNA technology
Production of carotenoids by recombinant DNA technology

... The key limitation to the use of biological systems to produce carotenoids is the low productivity of these systems compared to chemical syntheses. One way to increase the productivity of carotenoid synthesis is to use recombinant DNA technology. However, before recombinant DNA technology and geneti ...

... 1970s the inheritance of serum and red cell proteins and antigens was studied in CF families, but no association with the disease was found (27, 54, 55). Since these markers covered only a small portion of the human genome, such a result was not surprising. In the early 1980s a seminal paper on the ...

Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
