... This procedure computes statistics about the distribution of a numeric variable. The output includes a computation of the skewness, kurtosis, and Shapiro-Wilk test. In addition, a stem and leaf plot, a box plot, and a normal probability plot can be requested. These plots are character plots. High re ...

Scalable Look-Ahead Linear Regression Trees

... Multiple authors have proposed methods to improve upon the accuracy of regression trees by generating models in the leaf nodes of the tree rather than to simply predict the mean. M5 [12], HTL [14], SECRET [5], incremental learning [11], SUPPORT [3], GUIDE [8], PHDRT [7] and SMOTI [9] are some of the ...

... A market trader has the choice of selling umbrellas or ice cream. It has a 60% chance of raining and a 40% chance of being fair. If it rains he will make $200 profit on umbrellas and lose $50 if he chooses ice cream. If it is fair, he will lose $10 selling umbrellas and make $150 selling ice cream. ...

A Survey on Data Mining and its Applications

... A common application of regression occurs when in place of mapping a tuple of data from some relation to a specific class, the value of variable is predicted based on the tuple itself.Regression involves smoothing data by fitting the data to a function. It could be linear or multiple, the linear inv ...

Forecasting

Forecasting is the process of making predictions of the future based on past and present data and analysis of trends. A commonplace example might be estimation of some variable of interest at some specified future date. Prediction is a similar, but more general term. Both might refer to formal statistical methods employing time series, cross-sectional or longitudinal data, or alternatively to less formal judgmental methods. Usage can differ between areas of application: for example, in hydrology, the terms ""forecast"" and ""forecasting"" are sometimes reserved for estimates of values at certain specific future times, while the term ""prediction"" is used for more general estimates, such as the number of times floods will occur over a long period.Risk and uncertainty are central to forecasting and prediction; it is generally considered good practice to indicate the degree of uncertainty attaching to forecasts. In any case, the data must be up to date in order for the forecast to be as accurate as possible.
