Mirages with atmospheric gravity waves
Mirages with atmospheric gravity waves

... light rays projected from the observer's eye. The atmosphere is modeled as a set of concentric spherical shells. The temperature profile, required by the program as input data, specifies a set of elevations and their temperatures. These elevations define isotherms that form the boundaries between th ...
POLARIZATION AND CRYSTAL OPTICS
POLARIZATION AND CRYSTAL OPTICS

... The polarization of light is determined by the time course of the direction of the electric-field vector 8(r, t). For monochromatic light, the three components of kT’(r, t) vary sinusoidally with time with amplitudes and phases that are generally different, so that at each position r the endpoint o ...

Electrophoretic liquid crystal displays: How far are we?

... In an organic medium with a low dielectric constant, of around 2, the number of ionic species per unit volume is low. Not many charges are available per particle. Hsu et al [9] report that in dodecane they find as few as 290 +/- 30 electrons on PMMA particles with a radius of 780 nm instead of 104 o ...

Thomas Young (scientist)

Thomas Young (13 June 1773 – 10 May 1829) was an English polymath and physician. Young made notable scientific contributions to the fields of vision, light, solid mechanics, energy, physiology, language, musical harmony, and Egyptology. He ""made a number of original and insightful innovations""in the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs (specifically the Rosetta Stone) before Jean-François Champollion eventually expanded on his work. He was mentioned by, among others, William Herschel, Hermann von Helmholtz, James Clerk Maxwell, and Albert Einstein. Young has been described as ""The Last Man Who Knew Everything"".
