... Preliminary adjustments: Switch on the power supply for the sodium lamp with the current control in position 3. Adjust the current to approximately 0.9 A, but not exceeding this value. Place a small loop of wire to the right of the diffusing screen. Four images should be visible, two of which are mo ...

ABCD law for Gaussian laser beams

... The ABCD law for Gaussian beams enables one to predict the parameters of a Gaussian beam that exits from an optical system, given the parameters of an input Gaussian beam as well as the ABCD matrix representing the optical system. The system may be arbitrarily complex with many optical components. K ...

Chapter 5. IR Spectroscopy and Raman Scattering

... The possible vibrations of a molecule are sensitive to IR absorption if the vibration results in a change in the dipole moment, u, of the molecule. The dipole moment is the product of the charge times distance and is similar to the moment of inertia in mechanics except that charge is the weighting f ...

... Vega magnitude system: Defined such that the star Vega has V=0.03 and zero colors (originally V=0, but measurements changed slightly). In this system, the zero point flux is different for different bands, since it is based on the SED of Virgo (an A0 V star). Johnson UVBRI uses this system. AB magnit ...

Magnetic circular dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra; they can also probe paramagnetic properties and the symmetry of the electronic levels of the studied systems, such as metal ion sites.
