Single-shot measurement of a 52 fs pulse
Single-shot measurement of a 52 fs pulse

... To obtain reliable measurements uniform illumination on the crystal is essential. In our case the total2 power density incident on the crystal was -2 ,uJ/cm with a spot size of -3 cm. We tested the influence of the spatial beam profile on the measurement by introducing a varying delay into one arm o ...

Non-reciprocal ultrafast laser writing

... We will refer to this phenomenon as the photothermal effect in non-centrosymmetric media, or the bulk photothermal effect, to highlight that the light-induced heat current can be excited even under homogeneous illumination and in a homogeneous noncentrosymmetric medium45. However, the developed phen ...

Second-Surface Silvered Glass Solar Mirrors of Very

... In this section we show how the performance of second-surface silvered reflectors for CPV may be improved by addition of thin film dielectric layers between the silver and the glass back surface. Dielectric layers have been designed and used to boost the performance of front-surface silvered mirrors ...

Wigner Distribution in Optics
Wigner Distribution in Optics

... In 1932 Wigner1 introduced a distribution function in mechanics that permitted a description of mechanical phenomena in a phase space. Such a Wigner distribution was introduced in optics by Dolin2 and Walther3, 4 in the sixties, to relate partial coherence to radiometry. A few years later, the Wigne ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
