... Francesco Maria Grimaldi coined the word "diffraction" and was the first to record accurate observations of the phenomenon in 1665.[2][3] In classical physics, the diffraction phenomenon is described as the apparent bending of waves around small obstacles and the spreading out of waves past small op ...

In this manner it travels along the length of the fibre. The maximum angle at which it may enter the guide ...

... The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is a laser well suited for data centre applications due to its low cost, high speeds, good fiber coupling, and low threshold current The current standard wavelength for short-haul is 850 nm, however switching to 980 nm can improve transmission dista ...

... The basis of NIRS relies upon two principles: (1) that tissue is relatively transparent to nearinfrared light and (2) that there are compounds in tissue in which absorption of light is dependent on the oxygenation status of the tissue (Elwell & Phil, 1995). The propagation of light in tissue depends ...

Fresnel Diffraction Geometrical optics… …light can`t turn a corner. I

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
