... walk.” Regarding the hot topic of global warming, Schopf says there are several studies from NCAR and GFDL that are attempting to recreate 20th-century climate. I don’t know if the first two are referring to the change since 1998, but a scientist should know better than cherry pick the start date (see above). There is no evidence of cooling. Greenhouse Effect Demo

... Earth’s greenhouse effect warms the surface of the planet. Without the natural greenhouse effect, the average temperature at Earth’s surface would be below the freezing point of water. Thus, Earth’s natural greenhouse effect makes life, as we know it possible. However, human activities, primarily th ...

Instrumental temperature record

The instrumental temperature record shows fluctuations of the temperature of earth's climate system. Initially the instrumental temperature record only documented land and sea surface temperature, but in recent decades instruments have also begun recording ocean temperature. Data is collected from thousands of meteorological stations around the globe and through satellite observations. The longest-running temperature record is the Central England temperature data series, that starts in 1659. The longest-running quasi-global record starts in 1850.
