Experimental test of plant defence evolution in four species using

... We used linear regressions to test for the evolution of plant traits following the removal of rabbits. For each species, we fit linear models with age of exclosure as a predictor of the average plant trait value per rabbit exclosure (population mean). We infer a significant relationship between age of ...

Plant Parts We Eat - Oklahoma 4-H

... With some plants we eat more than one part. The root of the beet plant is what most people like to eat, but the leaves are also good to eat. We can eat beet leaves in salads when the leaves are young and tender. When they get bigger, they taste better cooked. We usually eat the root of the onion pl ...

Plant Reproduction - Scientist in Residence Program

... People do not often make the connection between flower and fruit. Both are all about reproduction. To be able to look at the structure of a flower and actually see how it develops into fruit is a very powerful way of demonstrating this relationship. Ovaries, which contain eggs, will ultimately devel ...

INDIRECT EFFECTS OF A TOP PREDATOR ON A RAIN FOREST

... Abstract. Tropical rain forests, some of the most diverse natural communities, have been characterized either as inherently stable or as extremely fragile. Theoretically, complex food webs allow for alternative pathways and overlapping functions within and among trophic levels, such that cascading e ...

Plant breeding

Plant breeding is the art and science of changing the traits of plants in order to produce desired characteristics. Plant breeding can be accomplished through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complex molecular techniques (see cultigen and cultivar).Plant breeding has been practiced for thousands of years, since near the beginning of human civilization. It is practiced worldwide by individuals such as gardeners and farmers, or by professional plant breeders employed by organizations such as government institutions, universities, crop-specific industry associations or research centers.International development agencies believe that breeding new crops is important for ensuring food security by developing new varieties that are higher-yielding, resistant to pests and diseases, drought-resistant or regionally adapted to different environments and growing conditions.
