Hypocenter depths of large interplate earthquakes and their relation
Hypocenter depths of large interplate earthquakes and their relation

... present simulation, we use depth-dependent h values ranging from 50 m to 1 km because h* varies with depth. The maximum value of h/h* = 0.018 assures stability of the present simulation. Kato and Hirasawa [13] argued that the ratio of h* to the A3B 6 0 zone width controls the seismic coupling coe⁄ci ...

... NW Poland is near vertical (Grad et al., 2005).“ The original study by Grad et al. (2005) includes reinterpretation of some deep seismic sounding profiles carried out in Poland, but nothing related with EQ analysis. Answer to P8 line 10. EQs of large magnitudes are generated on large tectonic faults ...

As also shown by the author, the stress rates derived from the GPS deformation rates can be effectively used to locate the areas with high seismic risk. Furthermore, daily variations of derived strain-stress rates from dense GPS net ...

Earthquake casualty estimation

Recent advances are improving the speed and accuracy of loss estimates immediately after earthquakes (within less than an hour) so that injured people may be rescued more efficiently. After major and large earthquakes, rescue agencies and civil defense managers rapidly need quantitative estimates of the extent of the potential disaster, at a time when information from the affected area may not yet have reached the outside world. For the injured below the rubble every minute counts. To rapidly provide estimates of the extent of an earthquake disaster is much less of a problem in industrialized than in developing countries. This article focuses on how one can estimate earthquake losses in developing countries in real time.
