... In this talk, the basic toolbox of the Innsbruck quantum information processor based on a string of trapped Ca+ ions will be reviewed. For quantum information science, the toolbox operations are used to encode one logical qubit in entangled states distributed over seven trapped-ion qubits. We demons ...

COMPUTING QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITIONS PREAMBLE

... A phase transition occurs when the thermodynamic properties of a material display a singularity as a function of the external parameters. Imagine, for instance, taking a piece of ice out of the freezer. Initially, its properties change only slowly with increasing temperature. However, at 0°C, a sudd ...

So the point of the third chapter is to carry empiricist-, naturalist-, and physicalistminded readers as gently as possible into chapter four which contends that we really do have some a p ...

Quantum Knots and Lattices, or a Blueprint for Quantum Systems

Thus, nothing from classical knot theory is lost with the above modified definition of knot type. But on the other h ...

Topological quantum field theory

A topological quantum field theory (or topological field theory or TQFT) is a quantum field theory which computes topological invariants.Although TQFTs were invented by physicists, they are also of mathematical interest, being related to, among other things, knot theory and the theory of four-manifolds in algebraic topology, and to the theory of moduli spaces in algebraic geometry. Donaldson, Jones, Witten, and Kontsevich have all won Fields Medals for work related to topological field theory. In condensed matter physics, topological quantum field theories are the low energy effective theories of topologically ordered states, such as fractional quantum Hall states, string-net condensed states, and other strongly correlated quantum liquid states.
