... sin θ cos θ Recall that to diagonalize A over R means to find a matrix P ∈ GL2 (R) for which A′ := P AP −1 is diagonal. (a) Prove that one can diagonalize A over R if and only if θ is a multiple of π. (b) Consider the same matrix A as an element of C2×2 , that is, as having complex number entries. P ...

... studying vector spaces. The theory of bases says that any vector space can be written as a direct sum of lines. In the same way, algebras are a very nice place to study multiplication. There is a notion analogous to direct sum, called tensor product, which makes it possible to multiply things even i ...

Originally the atom will be at rest, but when the photon is emitted there is going to be a recoil and the center of mass momentum will be non zero. Intuitively the photon momentum will be opposite the center of mass momentum of the atom, but we wil ...

Tensor operator

""Spherical tensor operator"" redirects here. For the closely related concept see spherical basis. In pure and applied mathematics, particularly quantum mechanics and computer graphics and applications therefrom, a tensor operator generalizes the notion of operators which are scalars and vectors. A special class of these are spherical tensor operators which apply the notion of the spherical basis and spherical harmonics. The spherical basis closely relates to the description of angular momentum in quantum mechanics and spherical harmonic functions. The coordinate-free generalization of a tensor operator is known as a representation operator
