
National Popular Vote Interstate Compact
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among several U.S. states plus the District of Columbia to allocate their presidential electors to the winner of the national popular vote under certain conditions, with the intent of addressing shortcomings in the current Electoral College system. As of October 2015, the compact had been joined by ten states and the District of Columbia. Their 165 combined electoral votes amount to 7001307000000000000♠30.7% of the total Electoral College vote, and 7001611000000000000♠61.1% of the 270 votes needed for the compact to go into effect.
