... Optical interconnections, analog signal processing In electronic computing systems interconnections are made by use of conducting wires, coaxial cables or conducting channels within integrated circuits. Optical interconnections may similarly be realized by use of integrated optical waveguides. Howev ...

Difficulties associated with working with UV and IR optics

... Reflective coatings are limited to wavelengths greater than 0.15 microns if they are to be broadband, though narrow bandwidth filters can be designed for lower wavelengths [1]. One of the difficulties associated with coating UV optics is that coatings are applied at high temperatures, so stress is i ...

Opto-Mechanical Image Quality Degradation of Single Point

... A thorough lens design tolerancing can be done only after a opto-mechanical layout is established. The knife edge method, centered on the mechanical axis, may not provide the correct spot size diameter since the spot could be off by 100 um. To reduce this 100 um offset, a doublet design will reduce ...

... If the atoms in the vapor cell had a single excited state but two hyperfine ground states (we call them both “ground” states because neither can decay via an allowed transition), and the separation of the ground states was less than the Doppler width, then one might see a spectrum like in Figure 4. ...

3D optical data storage

3D optical data storage is the term given to any form of optical data storage in which information can be recorded and/or read with three-dimensional resolution (as opposed to the two-dimensional resolution afforded, for example, by CD).This innovation has the potential to provide petabyte-level mass storage on DVD-sized discs (120mm). Data recording and readback are achieved by focusing lasers within the medium. However, because of the volumetric nature of the data structure, the laser light must travel through other data points before it reaches the point where reading or recording is desired. Therefore, some kind of nonlinearity is required to ensure that these other data points do not interfere with the addressing of the desired point. No commercial product based on 3D optical data storage has yet arrived on the mass market, although several companies are actively developing the technology and claim that it may become available ""soon"".
