Intermediary Java Developer
Position Overview:
The purpose of this role is to design, develop and support a variety of Java EE applications
to meet business objectives of the client.
Reporting line of role: Head of IT Development and Support
Level of Accountability: Functional Leadership/Specialist
Location: Bellville, Cape Town
The key responsibilities of the incumbent will be:
 Development of/ or enhancements to applications for internal clients based on
specifications from business analysts.
 Analyze, design, develop, document and maintain high quality business applications
 Maintenance of existing applications.
 The applications will be developed using object-oriented methodologies and written in
Java. They will generally be server-based Java components and servlet/jsp/jsf-based
web applications written using established frameworks.
 The applications may also need to integrate to back-end systems.
 Interact with users and business analysts to gather, interpret and understand business
requirements.
 Interact with project managers and provide work estimates for projects.
 Take ownership of projects.
 Build enterprise applications per environment on a central repository
 Log and facilitate a deployment on a change control system
 Manage the distribution and execution of application unit tests (each developer
executes and tests its own)
 Manage testing of defects and/or enhancements
 Compile and distribute release notes
The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:
 At least 5 years Java SE Development
 At least 3 years Java EE Development
 Must have at least 5 years’ experience in development of object oriented enterprise
Java systems
 Analysis / design experience is an advantage
 Health Insurance background is an advantage.
Knowledge:
 Understanding of object-oriented analysis and design is an advantage

 Experience on larger systems / teams and all aspects of the SDLC on large projects are
important.
 Java 5 / 6
 Spring is an advantage
 Hibernate 3.3 , JPA is an advantage
 JavaScript, AJAX, JSP, XML
 JUnit
 Log4J
 EJB3
 WebSphere MQ (JMS)is an advantage
 XSLT, XSD
 SQL - oracle
 Subversion
 Webservers : WebSphere,
 MyEclipse Bling & Rad7 is an advantage at least eclipse
 Windows, Linux
 Experience in implementing web services
 JDBC
