Telecommunications Relay Service: (800) 833-6388 View the partial eclipse of the sun from Goldendale Observatory State Park OLYMPIA – May 3, 2012 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission invites the public to view the partial eclipse of the sun from Goldendale Observatory State Park in Klickitat County. The viewing runs from 4 to 7 p.m. May 20 in the interpretive center theater at Goldendale Observatory State Park, 1602 Observatory Drive in Goldendale. Participants may view the 95 percent eclipse of the sun by the moon on the large screen monitor of the interpretive center’s indoor theater. Live video images from the observatory’s solar telescope will display the moon’s passage between Earth and sun, creating the partial solar eclipse. The Discover Pass is required to attend this event. This celestial event is one of many interpretive programs at Goldendale Observatory State Park in 2012. The observatory also will play host to Discover Outer Space – a Centennial 2013 event on June 5, where visitors may watch the rare transit of Venus across the sun. Goldendale Observatory State Park is a five-acre educational facility on a 2,100-foot-high hilltop, one mile north of the city of Goldendale. The observatory houses one of the nation's largest public telescopes, featuring a 24-inch Cassegrain reflecting telescope. Sky-watchers have viewed the universe at the observatory since its opening in 1973. The park offers views of the countryside from atop the observatory hill in the daytime and views of the space at night.
